New research conducted in adults with major depressive episodes at Iowa State University in the US has suggested that an acute bout of exercise (an exercise session during one day) can reduce symptoms of depression and benefit other therapeutic measures.
Over the 8-week programme, participants exercised for 30 mins at moderate intensity and reported positive effects on depression, such as alleviating their symptoms for at least 75 mins after exercise - particularly for those that did so in conjunction with other forms of therapy interventions (such as CBT).
Although it was a small study with only about 30 participants it suggests that there can be considerable benefits for those with depression - not only on a cumulative/chronic basis of becoming more physically active long-term - but also on a day to day basis, as and when you feel up to it.
